With recent shower storms, the Grand County Board of Commissioners opted to wait for a week to enact a Level 1 fire ban.

In a 2-1 vote, Commissioner Kris Manguso was the lone vote to support the Grand County Sheriff’s Office recommendation for the fire ban.

Even though Grand County Sheriff Brett Schroetlin said in the meeting, “We don’t want to be reactionary… We want to take a step ahead and keep our county safe.”

In contrast, Grand Fire Chief Brad White, felt that the recommendation for the fire restrictions based more on politics rather than science.

Chief White cited the seven criteria for a fire ban and of those seven only two had been met. The criteria considers things such as: fuel moistures, three day mean energy release component, live moisture, drought conditions, and impact on available resources.

The Sheriff’s department did note that they have found unattended fires at campgrounds in their patrols.
