Sylvia Calhoun and Matthew Stein

SS/Parshall FPD

Every year, Hot Sulphur Springs Parshall FPD recognizes its fire fighters, board members and community citizens for their contributions throughout the year by holding a year end banquet. This year, HSSP wanted to thank community member Sally DiScuillo. Sally makes most all the dinners for the crew on 4th Tuesday Trainings. “She takes such great care of us, we absolutely love her.” said Lt Russell. The firefighters gave her a gift certificate for Deans Public House. Thank you so much Sally.

Firefighter of the year is given to a crew member who has continually improved for their department and community. This year, this award went to Firefighter Sylvia Calhoun. Over the past 2 years, she has really stepped up her game. She went outside her comfort zone by instructing a training, taking a hazmat air monitoring class in Summit and attended the Fire Women Conference in Westminster immersing herself in H.O.T classes. (Hands On Training).

The coveted Chief’s Award for Excellence is given to a crew member who went above and beyond during the year. Someone who stands out by their leadership and actions. Chief Tom Baumgarten awarded this to Fire Cadet Matt Stein. “Matt has done everything we have asked of him. He consistently trains and responds. His desire for more knowledge is insatiable. At the age of 17, he has already obtained his first Colorado State fire certification. He now holds Fire and Life Safety Educator I. He is a team player, a great person to have around the fire house and we cannot see what his future holds for the fire service. It has been an honor watching this young man grow,” said Chief Baumgarten.

The Chief also recognized the top two responders. HSSP FPD ran 73 calls by November this year. Lieutenant Toni Russell responded to 64 of these and Fire Fighter Clint Becker responded to 47. Chief Baumgarten presented them each with custom made thin red line shadow boxes with their names on them. He also wanted to thank them both for their outstanding support of the department and their community.

Chief gave each of the crew members 5.11 winter jackets embroidered with the department Maltese and each of their names on the front. He also presented each board member with a jacket embroidered with the Maltese.

Congratulations to Firefighter Sylvia Calhoun and Fire Cadet Mathew Stein for being awarded the 2 top honors at the department. We look forward to another great year with this amazing crew!
