Jon Morrissey selected as Sulphur District Ranger

Jon Morrissey has been selected as the new district ranger for the Sulphur Ranger District of the Arapaho National Forest located in Granby, Colo. Morrissey will begin his new position on June 27, 2016. He replaces Craig Magwire who retired in May.

Morrissey comes to the Arapaho National Forest from the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire. Since 2013, he has been the District Ranger onthe Pemigewasset District. Prior to that  he was the Leadville District Ranger on the San Isabel National Forest. During that time he also detailed into a temporary assignment as the Sulphur District Ranger. Morrissey’s other experience includes two recreation positions on the Gunnison Ranger District and a timber/silviculture position on the Ouray Ranger District of the Uncompahgre National Forests.

Before joining the U.S. Forest Service, Morrissey worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Atlanta as a forester and a real estate appraiser. Originally from San Antonio, Texas, he has a master’s degree

in forestry from Texas A&M University. “Jon brings an extensive amount of natural resource and administrative experience to the Forest and the Sulphur Ranger District,” said Forest Supervisor Monte Williams. “His experience in recreation management, working with partners, and in building and maintaining relationships internally and externally will be an incredible asset to the Forest and Sulphur Ranger District.”

Morrissey and his wife Colleen met in Colorado and consider the state their home. They have chosen to return to Granby based on the wonderful experience they had in 2011.

“I am fortunate to have another opportunity to work with the Forest andDistrict staff, local communities, other agencies, and partners in this beautiful and special place.“ Morrissey said.

The Sulphur Ranger District includes more than 440,000 acres, 600 miles of road, 400 miles of trail, four wilderness areas, 11 campgrounds, the Congressionallydesignated Arapaho National Recreation Area, and Winter Park Resort.
