On Tuesday evening, the West Grand Lady Mustang’s volleyball team beat the visiting Moffat County Bulldogs in four sets.

To start the match, the Bulldogs came out serving hard and with a high tempo offense and WG found themselves down 3-7.

After a timeout, the Mustangs responded very well, increasing their tempo of the game and started cutting into the lead, to then tie it up at 11, and go on to take the lead and the set, 25-21. In the following set, the Mustangs stayed in the match but just didn’t have the same intensity as the first set. The ladies also had too many missed serves and lost this set 19-25.

“We need to eliminate our unforced errors,” said Coach Kim Bodemann. WG would lead set three throughout the entire game but the Moffat team would keep the game close as the Mustangs would win, 25-21. The final set of the evening would be controlled by the Mustangs.

The ladies worked hard, kept the moment and never let up, finishing with a 25-14 victory. A key to the win is the Mustangs never stood still and worked together. The WG crowd and student body was awesome, said Bodemann.

Throughout the match, the Mustangs played with confidence.

They had some great diving saves, good blocks, and finished plays. Coach Bodemann said, “This was a great win for us. We gained some confidence and our serve receive was much better.”

The girls were absorbing the hard serving of some of the Moffat players. This is a good match to continue to build off.” In the match, hitting was fairly-equally distributed as Senior Emma DeSanti had nine kills, followed by Sophomores Alex Schake with eight, and Maddy Probst with seven, and Senior Mikayla Shearer added six kills along with her four blocks. DeSanti added four blocks, and 12 assists. Junior Josy Wheatley led the team with assists with 16. Freshman Sage Lechman was 100% from the service line, serving 16 times. Coach Scott Terryberry commented, “I’m very pleased to how they responded coming out of a long weekend, showing lots of grit and desire.”

The JV team lost in two sets, 16-25, 16-25. The team played pretty well, but found themselves down early in both sets against a fairly solid Bulldogs team. They worked hard and never gave up, which shows a lot of character from some young players.

The Lady Mustangs will host their West Grand Volleyball Tournament this Friday and Saturday. The teams that will be attending our Meeker, Calhan, Clear Creek, Peyton, Gilpin County, Cedaredge, and Sanford. The Mustangs will play the first match on Friday starting at noon vs Gilpin County.
