Summer is the perfect time to lose oneself in a good book while relaxing in the shade and sipping a cold beverage. Across Grand County, adults carved out time in their busy schedules to do just that by participating in Grand County Library District’s adult summer reading program. Our theme was a Universe of Stories and honored the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing in 1969.

To celebrate the momentous occasion, our program encouraged adults to learn about NASA and the international space race. Additionally, the library provided opportunities to explore new territory, specifically with a focus on international books, authors, and events. The Universe of Stories program broadened our horizons by increasing our understanding of things both scientific and unfamiliar.

With a universe of options from which to choose, each individual selected their personal preference for reading, watching, doing, and listening categories. Some participants dug into the history of the space race, learned of current space efforts, and imagined new technology in science-fiction adventures. Many read accounts of international politics and history or cooked up delicious international recipes, like Vietnamese Pho and Mexican Pozole Rojo. Some attended scientific library programs and enjoyed music performed by international artists. Many explored GCLD’s universe of online resources and learned foreign languages, listened to digital audiobooks, and streamed movies.

All adults who completed the program entered a district-wide prize drawing for an Apple Watch Generation 3. We are happy to announce that our winner is Joy McCoy. Congratulations, Joy, and thanks to all who participated! If you missed out this year, make sure to stay tuned for information on next year’s Summer Reading Program, starting in June 2020.

Although our summer days are dwindling, the fun at the library continues! We invite all adult library cardholders to join GCLD’s Adult Virtual Book Club. We explore a new genre each quarter and allow members to choose their own titles. Each quarter culminates with engaging book discussions, food, and fun at parties at the Kremmling and Hot Sulphur Springs Libraries.

With autumn approaching, the Virtual Book Club will Fall into Fantasy. Fantasy is the most ancient of genres that began with mythology, folklore, and fairy tales. Today’s fantasy authors continue the tradition of building imaginative worlds that never could be. In order to determine whether a book fits the fantasy genre, simply look for the key ingredient of magic.

If you would like to join the Virtual Book Club and Fall into Fantasy, please email me at smathis@gcld.org or call me at the Kremmling Library at 970-724-9228. Parties to celebrate the fantasy genre are slated for Monday, November 4 at the Kremmling Library and Wednesday, November 6 at the Hot Sulphur Springs Library. We hope to see you there!
