Rachel Winegar’s name has been in the Denver media recently for awful reasons. At the age of 30 with three young children, she was diagnosed in August with stage 4 colorectal cancer that had already spread to lungs and lymph nodes. Rachel and her family are outdoors people who recently moved from their small ranch near Gunnison to the Denver area to be closer to medical treatment. Doctors have told them barring a miracle, the cancer is not curable, but it IS treatable. Rachel jumped into chemo with both feet, and it really slammed her hard. Still, with some adjustments of medications, she is able to take an active role in caring for her children.

She says her faith is carrying her through the tough times, and her family is helping to keep life for the family as normal as possible. This story is not without its local connections as Rachel is the granddaughter of Rocky Bishop who grew up many years ago on the Williams Fork and was a more recent resident of Silver Spruce. Because of Rocky’s dementia, she has not been told of Rachel’s illness.

If anyone would like to help support the Winegar family, especially in this holiday season, they may do so. The GoFundMe site is https://www. gofundme.com/spencer-and-rachelwinegar? ssid=1151797428&pos=1
