WGMS at Region 6 tournament

notes from wrestling coach Brian Strathman

The West Grand Middle School and the Lil Mustangs competed in the Region 6 wrestling tournament in Grand Junction. The top 3 Elementary students and the top 6 Middle School students move on to the state tournament in Denver this weekend. As a combined team the team finished in 3rd place overall out of 53.

The WG middle school was represented by Ben Biekert, Dane Biekert, Wyatt Shearer, Jacob Murphy, Wyatt Howell, and Chris Wellington. The team wrestled well competing against 53 other schools from all classification of the western slope. Both Ben and Jacob finished the day one place out of qualifying for the state tournament. Moving on to the State tournament in Denver are Wyatt Howell and Chris Wellington.

The WG Elementary team had an outstanding day. The entire team wrestled well which helped the team finish 1st in the Elementary School Division. This is the first time they have held both events in one day and was exciting for all the wrestlers to bring home the team trophy. The kids were very proud of their accomplishment. Wrestling for WG in the elementary division were Ashton Lockhart, Caleb Klotz, Heaven Vail, Walker Howell, Landon Lockhart, Stran Leachman, Ruben Hatcher, Taylor Luttrell, and Blake Terryberry. Finishing in 1st place in the Region were Caleb, Landon, and Blake. Also qualifying for State were Heaven, Walker, Stran, Ruben and Taylor. West

Grand will be represented by 10 wrestlers at the State Tournament at the National Western. Wrestling begins on Friday and continues on Saturday.
