WITH STATE IN SIGHT…. West Grand sophomore A.J. Multerer inverts— and eventually pins, 0:50 into the first period—Nucla junior Michael Pfifer during action at the 2A-Region 1 Championships held Feb. 9-10 at Delta High School. Competing at 145 pounds, Multerer finished 2-3 at the meet, and finished in sixth place. Only the top four at each weight in Region 1 will wrestle at the State Championships (Feb. 15-17 inside Denver’s Pepsi Center), however, and representing the Mustangs will be senior 195-pounder Noah Schroeder. After a by-rule default win over Cedaredge’s Pedro Madaleno—whom he’d already beaten in the consolation semifinals— Schroeder improved to 3-2 at the tournament and placed fourth. Junior Marcos Ramirez nearly advanced as well, but ended up fifth at 182 after losing a 2-1 battle to Paonia’s Anthony Miller. In the team standings, WGHS totaled 39 points and finished tied with Dove Creek for 10th place.
