Stephen “Steve” Young McCallie

75, of Kremmling, CO

Stephen Young McCallie, 75, of Kremmling, CO passed away Monday, August 27, 2018 in Greeley, CO.  He was born October 14, 1942 in Indianapolis, IN to Gilbert and Dorthyann (Young) McCallie where he grew up.

He graduated from Purdue University in 1964 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Forestry and later earned his Master’s from Oregon State University. 

Upon earning his degree in forestry from Purdue, which he didn’t even have time to attend graduation due to having to board a plane to start his career with the Bureau of Land Management as a Smoke Jumper in Alaska and then as a forester in Coos Bay, Oregon.

Steve served in the U.S. Army from 1965 until being honorably discharged in 1969.

In 1976 he settled in Kremmling, CO for the remainder of his life.  For 41 years he worked for the Bureau of Land Management as a forester and fighting wildland fires in the summers, retiring January 3, 2006.  After retirement from forestry he worked for the Town of Kremmling. 

Steve married Doris J. Sustrich in 2000 in Grand County where they shared 18 wonderful years together.

An avid book reader, he also enjoyed woodworking, fishing and hunting and had been a member of Ducks Unlimited.

Thankful to have shared his life are his wife, Doris of Kremmling; children; Scott McCallie of Aurora, Kimberly Woog of Kremmling, Tracy (Jason) Mossman and Sandie (Michael) Baca all of Greeley; 6 grandchildren, Christian and Noah Baca, Kloe and Wyatt Cross, Bowden Mossman and Aden Woog.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Diane Lower.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, September 3 at the Gore Range Baptist Church, 1117 Jackson Ave, Kremmling, CO.  Inurnment will follow at the Kremmling Cemetery with military honors.
