The first track meet of the season was held on March 18, the beginning of spring break for West Grand. A majority of the track team was missing for this meet in Rifle. There were 22 teams in attendance, with many 3 and 4A teams. For the boys, Antonio Corrales captured first place in the pole vault going 11’ and Kody Ekren took fourth with 10’ and Brady Gore taking sixth with a vault of 9’6”. Taking second place in the girl’s pole vault was Ralin Corrales at 7’6” and Sydney Almgren taking eighth at 6’6”.

Due to bad weather the meet scheduled for March 26, in Berthoud was cancelled. On Monday, March 28, Glenwood Springs held a JV meet. West Grand sent most of their team, in order to get back into the swing of things. The girls team came home with a second place finish out of 11 teams scoring 73 points. R. Corrales took first place in pole vault at 8’6” and took fourth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 19.31, and was on the first place 4X200 relay team with Charlee Manguso, Gabby Willson and Sydney Ritschard finishing in 1:58.65. Ritschard also captured first in the 100 dash with a 13:58 and took sixth in the long jump with 12’2.25”. Taking second place in the discus was Willson with a throw of 82’3.5” and placed third in the pole vault at 7’6”. Peyton Bodemann took second in the shot with a distance of 28’1”, took third in the 100 hurdles with 18.87, and placed fourth in the discus at 72’3.5”. Finishing third in the 300 hurdles was Almgren in 58.16 and vaulted 6’6” to finish sixth. The 4X100 relay of R. Corrales, Bodemann, Willson and Ritschard was easily winning that race but a bad hand off, dropping the baton, at the last exchange denied them the win.

The Mustang boys finished in sixth place with 70 points. Picking up points was Josh O’Hotto taking second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 48.22 and jumping 16’10.75” in the long jump to take second. Gore took second in the pole vault at 10’, as Gabe Demattos took third at 9’, and Luke Watermann taking fourth at 9’. The 4X100 relay team of Travis Barnes, Demattos, Gore and Watermann brought home second with a time of 12.25 and that same team also took second in the 4X200 relay in 47.91. Barnes also ran the 100 dash in 12.25 to take fourth. Placing fifth in the shot was Junior Dominguez with a distance of 31’4.5”. Marcos Ramirez placed second in the shot with 34’11.5” and took fifth in the discus with a throw of 87’10.5”. The 4X800 relay team of James Matson, Jimmy Uren, Cody Docheff and Jonathan Gale had a time of 11:02 to take fifth place. In the 4X400 relay, made up of O’Hotto, Matson, Dominguez and Uren also placed fifth with a time of 4:24.99.

With Spring Break over, the West Grand track season will be in full swing with a complete team participating this Saturday, April 2 in Greeley. The Mustangs look to improve their times and measurements at this meet.
