West Grand High School hosted their last game of the year 2018 against intercounty rival, Middle Park High School, on Thursday, December 20. As it was the final day of the first semester as well, there was an excitement in the air. The Mustangs played a great first quarter and played even with the Panthers, ending the quarter ahead 10-9.

However, rebounding and turnover woes stalled scoring in the second quarter to put the Mustangs down at halftime. We had a 3rd surge and played the 4th quarter even, but it was not enough.

MPHS had eight girls in the box score while the Mustangs had four girls scoring. We played hard and competed with them; we have to find ways to get out of our scoring slumps earlier. West Grand lost 27-49.
The next day, WGHS traveled to Clear Creek as the snow fell and everyone was on Christmas break. Unfortunately, we did not start the game well. In the first quarter, we struggled to find our rhythm. After an even second quarter, the Mustangs came alive and played a great second half, scoring 14 points in the fourth quarter. Clear Creek was a scrappy team and it was a little too late for the Mustangs. Mustangs dropped to Clear Creek 37-39.

Ending the 2018 year and heading into our league play, I am encouraged by the heart and work that these young women display. In games where we could have given up and thrown in the towel, they refuse. That determination and grit will be needed as we enter into 2019. The Western Slope league is a competitive league with tough teams. I’m excited, hopeful, and grateful!
Go Mustangs!
